Mangrove nursery development – Príncipe Island
The creation of a mangrove tree nursery in Praia Salgada, Príncipe Island, is showing promising results after a bumpy start finding the best methodology.
The work was initiated in 2019 with field experiments to assess the best strategy to propagule growth and avoid predation. In cooperation with the Forest Management entity, the association AARBIP (Friends of the Principe Island Biosphere Reserve Association) and Abade local community, the first mangrove tree nursery in Príncipe Island is growing and expanding this aquatic forest.
Recently the plantation counts with 1300 propagules and 800 derived plants of Rizophora harrisonii. The estimated survival rate is 95%.
