Natural History Collections Theoretical and Practical Fundaments
- Training Course
One of the objectives of the COBIO-NET Project is to provide advanced training and promote public curiosity and understanding of marine biodiversity through the creation of new collections for the Príncipe Biosphere Reserve, Príncipe island, São Tomé and Príncipe. For this purpose Natural History Collections Theoretical and Practical Fundaments was one of that courses that tooke place at the Principe Biosphere Reserve (RBP), São Tomé e Príncipe on 4 October 2019.
This course will involved theoretical and practical training on the creation, conservation and management of marine collections with a particular focus on fluid preserved fish and invertebrates.
Was organised by the RBP and Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência, Universidade de Lisboa (MUHNAC) with the collaboration of Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) and included the participation of 15 technicians and researchers from the RBP, the Museu de História Natural de Maputo (MHNM), the Department of Biological Sciences of University Eduardo Mondlane (UEM), the Marine Biology Station of Inhaca (EBMI) and the Príncipe Foundation (FP).
The main objectives of this training were:
- Training on collecting biological materials, sorting, preparation, preservation and integration into MC.
- Training on MC labeling, cataloging and registration.
- Training on MC conservation and storage conditions
- Training on the accessibility and management of MC for scientific purposes and public outreach.
Contents:
- Theoretical and practical fundaments on collecting methods, soerting, preparation and preservation of marine fish and invertebrates in liquid and dry environments.
- Theoretical and practical fundaments on the integration of marine invertebrates into NHC: labeling, cataloging, registration procedures.
- Theoretical and practical fundaments on environmental conditions for the conservation and storage of MC.
- Theoretical and practical fundaments on the accessibility and management of MC for scientific purposes and public outreach.
