Data Management of Natural History Collections (NHC)

Data Management of Natural History Collections (NHC)

  • Training Course

This course took place in October 2019 in Príncipe Island at the Reserva da Biosfera do Principe (RBP) facilities, under the responsibility of MUHNAC.

The course addressed a number of issues related to the management of biodiversity data, in particular data from scientific natural history collections (NHC). It presented systems of databases that make use of standardized metadata models, such as DwC, which defines widely used data structure, facilitating data publishing, search and interoperability. Several good practices in data management and preservation were communicated through the presentation of protocols and guidelines for the development of various common tasks within NHC, from the collection of specimens to the management of their associated data. The course was attended by 14 participants, including professors, students and technicians; and aimed to capacitate the trainees with new knowledge and competencies to create databases, using metadata standards and follow best practices for data management.

The instructor of this advanced course was Luis Filipe Lopes, Senior Researcher of IHMT Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical.
