Comparison of mangrove forest structure and ecosystem services in Africa

A paper led by Vilma Machava-António, part of the COBIO-NET team, PHD Student at FCUL/MARE and lecturer at the University Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, provides a comparison of mangrove forest structure and ecosystem services in Maputo Bay (Eastern Africa) and Príncipe Island (Western Africa).

The main findings of this newly published project output indicate that mangrove forests bear more biodiversity in eastern Africa and provide more services and resources for local populations. However, a more intense exploitation leads to a higher degree of disturbance and degradation.
